CSA
CSA's (Community Supported Agriculture) are one of the best ways to support local farms and organic food growers.
How this works varies from town to town, and state to state, but basically the idea is that families within a community "buy shares" of each season's crop from one farmer (or a group of farms.
The investment allows the farmer to purchase the seed and natural compost that will be required for the growing season, and in turn the families each receive weekly boxes of fresh, organically grown produce.
It's a cooperative effort and is (pardon the pun) growing rapidly around the world as a way to participate directly in how the food you eat is grown and how it gets to you.
