Compost
Compost -- a natural, organic way to fertilize crops -- is one of the most important ingredients in growing organic foods.
Recycling is Nature's way to be efficient, and composting is an important method to achieve natural, organic ways to nourish food crops, so that they grow healthy and strong.
Compost not only builds strong plants, it also nourishes and feeds the soil in which the plants grow, unlike chemical fertilizers that deplete the soil and poison the water supply.
To learn about composting, and to find sources, we've got some great links for you here.
Everything Compost
Recently we happily learned that our local nursery is now carrying a product we first learned about in the state where it comes from: Maine. We bought several bags, for our garden this summer, and will get more as we need them to keep the soil moist (in the hottest summer on record.)
There are several compost and mulch formulas available, but we like the one that has a mixture of Maine pine, lobster and crab shells, and seaweed. That stuff is miraculous! Both flowers and vegetables love it -- the rose we transplanted in the "wrong" season (because we had to. . . ) gave us a lovely new bloom just two weeks after we used this compost as mulch. (Ask me if I'm impressed by THAT!!)
This is the mulch I would choose every time, for all purposes.
So here's the link for you -- and if your garden center doesn't carry this, you need to print out this page and take it down to their buyers and insist! ===> Coast of Maine Compost
